Today I received a rather accusatory email from a podcaster that has had his show on Blubrry. His accusations centered around us not being able to find him a sponsorship.

We have never said we could guarantee any show that was part of the community a Flat Rate or CPM sponsorship. Their are many factors that go into finding a sponsor for a podcast. Let me list some points so that people know what we and media buyers look at.

Show Topic

Show Content

Production Consistency

The Podcasters Website

Audience of Show aka Demographics

Goals of the Ad Campaign

Their are additional factors that play into what shows can be offered deals and those that cannot. There are advertising deals that we have that are open ended. Which means any podcaster can sign up to participate examples of this would be GoDaddy and any of our Affiliate deals.

Just because we are not finding you a flat rate or cpm deal does not mean that you should not try and secure your own sponsor, and by all means you are always free to work with other companies.

Nothing we do for you is exclusive, you always have right of refusal for anything we do for you, all we have ever asked and will ever ask is that you allow us the opportunity to go out and sell a single ad spot on your show.

We wish every Blubrry Community member was on a CPM or Flat Rate ad deal, while trends continue to turn our way and the number of inquiries increase each day. Please understand that RawVoice is working very hard to help you power your podcast.

The beta testers have beat the system up, and all we were waiting on is the finalization of some templating code to allow each client to have more control of his web pages.

I created a video demo of how easy it was to use the entire publisher system last month, and for some reason never posted a link to it. So I hope you will take a look at the publisher video and give us some feedback on the system. (Video)

Over the past six weeks the team has been working very hard on what we are terming premium podcast statistics. Many of you using our Podcast Statistic service have asked for a wide variety of additional reports.

Many of you have noticed the tell tale signs that we have been adding the premium features, by reports that are not available to you in the free statistics system.

While our basic stats package will remain free we want to bring you a much richer data set in the plus package which will be priced at $5.00 a month (three month minimum) or $50.00 a year. We also have 100% branded solutions available as well for those running their own networks you should send Todd a email if you want your own branded solution.

While we will be adding more premium features throughout the summer via inputs of the users of the service, this is what the initial Premium Podcast Statistics will offer above and beyond the already very rich data sets that we provide already for free to community users.

Full Report of Clients

Full Report of Referrers

Full Report of Operating Systems

Full Report of Geographical Data

Daily Email Summary

Episode Trending by Month

Country Map Reporting

Audit of Uncounted Request

Export to Excel Files

Create Guest Account

This morning I instructed our CIO to have all shows that were using a RSS Feed generation service hosted by trafficgeyser.net and mypodfeeds.com to be terminated here at Blubrry.com

From this point forward we will no longer allow accounts from those two services. Content creators must choose wisely on the service that they align themselves with. I felt that service hurt the Blubrry brand and service we are trying to provide here.

This decision was made after several weeks of evaluation, what we found was that the very high majority of shows using those services had content that we felt in large part was not appropriate for the listeners visiting this website.

The majority of the shows were non compliant with our terms of service and the content was for the most part marketing pitches for their websites our services. Additionally the high majority of the shows did not have complete profiles and by their show profiles it was obvious that their sole purpose of being here was to build page rank.

While we will work with any show that feels their content should not have been removed, please recognize that we have done this to protect Blubrry Listeners and the other content creators that are part of this community.

We have never taken this action at Blubrry.com and hopefully never will have to again in the future. We have implemented a new strict review policy in order to protect the content creators on this website.

Tonight I was looking at shows on Blubrry and I found this podcast at the very top of the show listing. Name removed to protect the guilty.

What do you think a listener is going to do when they see this new episode listing. I can tell you what they are going to do they are going to skip it. The show will never be listened to.

The question I have for this podcaster is simple. Why did you even bother creating the content. You have no show notes, and you have not even done the basic things to make your show consumable to the public at large.

The question that needs to be asked should we delete shows like this, or do we spend hours trying to bring the show up to speed?

Those of you on Blubrry that are using the service will notice some changes to the free offering that greatly improves improves the user experience. [Details Here]

We also are very close to introducing a premium service that will offer greater detail to existing data, along with more reports that will make the RawVoice Statistics service the most feature rich podcast statistics service in the industry.

We will continue to have the free service but feel the list of plus up features will be so good that many of you will want the premium service for a small monthly fee. We will have an announcement soon on pricing and exactly what the premium package will include.

Why is it that podcasters will spend hours editing the content of their podcast but fail to spend 30 minutes one time to make sure that their RSS feed is setup properly. In some cases I blame whole heartedly the service they are on for hijacking the internal data of their RSS feed and not giving podcasters many choices in configuring them.

But in large part we see huge numbers of shows that have simply failed to put the time into making sure that their RSS feed is representing their show as well as their content.

We see massive numbers of shows rss feeds fail validation each and everyday. We see shows that are whole heartedly missing important data many shows have no description, no keywords, no contact information, no titles, no iTunes specific tags etc. The list goes on and the issue is growing each day.

Every year I have posted a state of the RSS feeds as a report I do for the annual Peoples Choice Podcast Awards. This year I would like to see a trend be reversed and quite honestly it would help us and all of the other sites that are syndicating content.

This Saturday I will be doing a online Tech Podcast Round Table event that will discuss RSS in detail and show you what should be in your rss feed and how taking a few minutes to get it squarred away will pay off big dividends. I hope you will join me.

I have instructed the team at RawVoice to start contacting individual podcasters that are part of the community, to gently encourage them to take a few minutes and add descriptions and album art to their show listings.

It literally drives me crazy to see show listings on Blubrry that have a show name and nothing else. The biggest abusers are the podcasters from Blog Talk Radio. Many of the shows that have signed up do not have standard iTunes art. Their show descriptions are 2-3 words and in many instances no description at all.

We are going to give the shows a reasonable time to clean up their listings then if they fail to do so we are going to pull the listings.

We have prided ourselves on having very clean listings, complete descriptions for shows and rich meta data but a small subset of podcasters have made us realize that if they are unwilling to clean up their listings then they likely are not supporting the community anyway.

Issues we deal with daily
-Using the URL for their home page as their RSS URL
-Using the RSS URL as their Home Page URL
-No Show Description or a very incomplete description
-No Keywords

We want to work with everyone in the community, but it’s a two way street!

We are pleased to announce some new features and changes to Blubrry!

First, the account settings page has changed. We’ve cleaned up the menu options by only providing a link to the Statisticss system (if you’ve filled out an advertising survey) and a link to the new Publisher system.

We’ve developed a new interface called the Publisher for members to manage their podcast(s) listed on Blubrry.com. Over the coming weeks we will be adding a number of features to the Publisher system for Blubrry members to utilize. I can’t get into the details what these new features include, but if you snoop around in the settings section you will find that we’re now asking for your twitter user name.

We’ve received a lot of complaints about home page coverage. We’ve changed the logic for the most recent podcast section to randomly select 4 episodes that have been created in the past few hours. we’re re-randomizing these 4 episodes every 15 minutes. This should provide fair exposure to all of the podcasts listed on Blubrry. Remember, your post has to include media in order for it to be included in the home page. blog posts will no longer be included on the home page.

Please contact us if you are having any problems or have suggestions how we can improve blubrry.

So as a Podcaster when you are talking to a media buyer one thing you will want to say if you are on the edge of making a deal happen is to mention that in the podcasting space their are no insertion fees to contend with like the mainstream media will invoke in their advertising pricing.

I had a discussion with a media creator today that is doing some shows on another media site.

He gets paid 35% of whatever the company providing the service can get by inserted advertising, and 50% of the advertising commission if he brings the advertiser to the vendor.

Considering the vendor is hosting the media for free, I am sure they have to really tight on what they give the person creating the media but 35% sounds really low.

I am very proud that RawVoice gives 70% of the advertising dollars back to the media creators that create the content. Their is definitely advantages in commission earnings if you don’t let someone control, and lock your content in.

Lets do the math on a 1000 dollar ad deal RawVoice media creators earn $700.00 in commissions. On the site that is in the above example they would get $350.00. Considering the price of hosting media is almost nothing these days why would anyone be willing to give up 35% in potential earnings for saving a few dollars in hosting cost?

The team at RawVoice has worked very hard to make the Blubrry site a great place for listeners to find and consume media. We have watched listeners behavior on the website and made changes to make it easier to use, yet keep the advanced features in place for those that are dedicated users of the website.

The same can be said for those that actually list their shows here, we provide opportunities for them to have rich media listings by uploading their branding into their show profiles and to have detailed show descriptions while at the same time not putting advertising around their listings.

Many podcasters take advantage of these branding opportunities, and complete their show profiles so that when people are looking for content they are able to find it through their completed profiles.

So while we think we have afforded both listeners and podcasters with a great opportunity by being listed on the site we also want to know what you think. The RawVoice team is going to be meeting soon to lay out our 2008 goals, and we want to hear from you what you think we need to do to make Blubrry a richer experience.

Send your comments to ceo@rawvoice.com and I will present them to the team in the next couple of weeks.

I want you to pay very close attention to the graph. The increase in Zune listeners in the first 2 weeks of 2008 tells me several things that people need to be aware of that are publishing podcasts at this time.

“Stats Provide by RawVoice Stats Service”

In the first two weeks of 2008 the number of people consuming my personal podcast with the Zune is WAY up. Over all my show download numbers are up about 15%. This is the largest growth my show has seen in a very long time.

What this proves is that when you put Podcast front and center in the Zune Interface like the Zune team has, and make it a integral part of the Zune MarketPlace people are bound to check podcast out.

Where Apple has largely failed in iTunes is that they have made podcast hard to find and a buried feature within the iTunes Interface. Today it is nearly impossible to find content that is fresh, the iTunes podcast interface is a wasteland of thousands of podfaded shows and huge numbers of single podcast episodes put up by network marketer’s.

The iTunes interface makes it virtually impossible for listeners to find shows that are not featured on the front page.

The Zune Marketplace growth is amazing. These are new listeners as I am retaining the iTunes portion of the Audience and picking up huge numbers of new Zune listeners.

iTunes 38.7%

Zune MarketPlace 21.3%

Juice 12.5%

Firefox 4.7%

Internet Explorer 4.1%

Nokia 3.0%

Zencast 1.2%

myPodder 1.2%

If this is any indication of things to come it could be very well that the majority of my podcast audience will originate from the Zune Marketplace in several months

A week or so ago one of our podcasters on an advertising buy very publicly bashed us for supposedly under paying him. After having done a double check on his download numbers we publicly replied that we felt we had paid the podcaster fairly.

This public bashing came after I had been in Vegas for a week with little sleep, and no other forewarning. It really caught me by surprise as the podcaster was still in a current ad buy and we were not aware that the show producer was unhappy.

I instructed Angelo to digg into the stats system and make sure we had not made a mistake. He over-viewed the data and backed up my conclusions.

The podcaster was not yet satisfied and frankly neither was I because we have worked hard to make sure our podcasters are treated with absolute fairness, and his demeanor was something that we never expected or had seen before.

With so many people using the stats system we knew the accuracy was very high. After all we built that Stats service to eliminate issues like this.

After getting back from Vegas, getting some sleep and digging into the issue some more we discovered were the issue was. When I went to review the podcasters follow on monthly data it simply was not in the database under the expected keyword. The subject show had no new downloads in the follow on month which was weird because they were still in an ad buy.

Turns out what happened was that both of us were right and both were wrong. Angelo figured out that the podcaster unknown to us started using a new keyword in his stats redirect, thus all downloads were being counted on the new keyword and because each keyword has its own dataset. I had no idea they had made the switch.

Originally I calculated his payment on the old keyword not knowing about them using the new keyword. This is why I had been so adamant that our numbers were right. Well it turns out our numbers where exactly right for the old keyword but the podcaster should have been paid on the new keyword.

Tonight I instructed Barry to cut the podcaster the difference we owe him, and we are putting in some measures in the stats system that will track when someone changes their keyword in the future.

We pride ourselves in taking care of the podcasters first and foremost, and while this is the first time something like this has ever happened it was not something we had ever anticipated. I am the CEO of this company and the buck stops here, and while we should have anticipated something like this happening we did not.

Some tips for Podcasters, if you think their is a issue in your payment, please contact us early and spell out in detail why you think the payment is off. We will go the extra mile to make sure that you are satisfied and get exactly what your show is supposed to get.

I was playing with Winamp the ever popular media player, podcatcher and media organizer this morning when I made a discovery that is to good not to point out.

While I am sure not a lot of people use the browser in Winamp those that do will begin to appreciate how well the RawVoice Generator the software that drives the RawVoice family of sites along with Blubrry.com integrates media smart players like Winamp.

When you load Blubrry in the Winamp browser the application automatically detects the media linked in the site and makes it available for immediate playing. Look at the graphic below.

Now if you compare Blubrry.com with some other podcast sites like Podshow.com in Winamp you will figure out very quickly that their site has not been optimized for the listeners using advanced media consumption applications like Winamp.

The RawVoice Generator is the only commercially available product that is a truly integrated, blogging, podcasting, video casting platform and social media publishing platform. That was designed from the ground up to allow companies and individuals to publish content quickly and easily with minimal management yet give the content consumer a easy path to accessing the content on a platform that is proven to be able to scale to multiple thousands of shows.

While we understand that a small number of people use the Winamp browser we are assured that as people come to this site and others that are running our solution that they will have a enhanced media experience when they are visiting one of the sites.

Why we do not understand why some companies in the podcasting space have made it difficult for people to consume content we are very pleased that we give media creators a equal shot at getting exposure and also the ability to have their content easily consumed.

Tags: Blubrry, Podshow, Winamp, Podcast

I have received a couple of emails from podcasters using our stats service. Sadly our attempt to communicate with some of you has resulted in you not getting notices from us even though we have sent three separate mailings.

If you are using the Blubrry Stats service we want to make you aware of a change to the stats redirect format. The change is a simple one but critical in that we found some media players primarily Windows Media Player and the Zune Marketplace player do not handle our old redirect format.

If you are still using the old style redirect please change to the new style immediately.

Example: Old Style

http://media.blubrry.com/keyword/http://domain.com/media.mp3

New Style:

http://media.blubrry.com/keyword/domain.com/media.mp3

The fix is dropping the second “http://” this will fix any issues your listeners may have!

Hey folks Todd here and I wanted to give you my impression on BlogWorld Expo that finished last week. First of all it was great meeting those of you that attended, and while the podcasting audience was relative small their were a number of new podcasters and soon to be podcasters in the attendance.

From the beginning of my involvement in Podcasting from October of 2004 I have been telling podcasters all along that if your not blogging as well as podcasting your hurting yourself badly.

This was talked about by Leo Laporte on the importance of Podcasters need to Blog and vice versa and use all channels of distribution.

I will add that blogging and podcasting on a regular basis increases engagement. If you are only engaging your audience once a month with a audio program your likelihood of show growth will be poor.

I have a full write up of Day 1 and Day 2 on my personal blog. I hope you will skim the play by play.

Today while I was looking at show profiles on Blubrry.com, yes I do read them I was so very surprised to see that a significant number of shows have really caused themselves to be penalized on the website.

The example I want to show you is a screen capture of a description of a show thats on the site.

This description is pretty funny while I don’t want to rag on the show. They put in their very short description that they are so meta. I’ll be very honest that is not meta in fact the description is ANTI-Meta and the show in question has effectively eliminated themselves from being found and indexed by a search engine.

Here is the crux of this blog post. Please go into your show profiles available via “your settings” and fill out all of the information that we so generously allow you to fill out.

I can guarantee as a listener I am not going to listen to a show that does not have a concise description in their profile. Sadly the show in question is broadcasting this on their home site as well because the data was pulled from their RSS feed.

The program profile pages have been redesigned on Blubrry! The new design is in response to the feedback we’ve received from the community. The new design focuses on usability.

Examples

The DaddyCast

Baseball Historian

We now include a subscribe & share widget on the right column that will make it easier for your audience to find your subscription information. Yahoo and Odeo have been replaced with Google and Microsoft Zune subscription links. The subscribe & share widget includes links to Digg and del.icio.us as well as to your RSS feed.

We’ve added new Play on iPhone buttons within each post. In case you were wondering, the Blubrry Player already supports the iPhone. The new iPhone buttons make it easy for iPhone users to consume your content on Blubrry.com.

We’re just getting started. Watch more more changes to Blubrry.com and the rest of the RawVoice communities!
